According to dermatologist and trichologist Kédima Nassif, who is a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), it is common for each person to lose about 60 to 100 hairs per day. To identify whether the amount of hair that comes off your scalp is normal, the professional teaches a trick:

“One tip to know if your hair is falling out more than it should be is the traction test. To do it, just join your hair in a small lock of about 60 and pull, sliding your hands to the ends of the strands. If more than six wires come out in this process, it is a sign that you should get a trichologist ”, he adds. But, after all,  what causes hair loss  ?

1. Genetics

“There is a chance that you will be genetically predisposed to suffer from thinning and thinning hair, which means that there will be a progressive reduction in the volume of hair over time. In these cases what happens is that the follicles, due to the genetically acquired sensitivity to male hormones, start to gradually decrease, thus producing smaller and thinner strands with each hair growth cycle. ”

2. Hormonal imbalance

Hormonal imbalances can affect causing changes throughout the body, including the hair. This is because hormones play a fundamental role in regulating the hair growth cycle. “While estrogens, female hormones, help keep hair growing, androgens, male hormones, can shorten this growth cycle, causing the hair to reach the fall phase more quickly.”

Thus, the doctor explains that an excess of androgen hormones can cause hair loss. This problem is also related to genetics, since the hormonal imbalance affects the hair of people who have a predisposition to follicular sensitivity much more than those who do not have such a predisposition.

3. Iron deficiency

According to Dr. Kédima, one of the main and most common causes of hair loss in women is iron deficiency in the blood, as the nutrient is essential for the production of protein for hair cells.

4. Vitamin B12 deficiency

“Vitamin B12 deficiency is directly related to hair loss, as the nutrient is essential to ensure the health of red blood cells, responsible for carrying oxygen to nourish different tissues in the body, including hair follicles.”

5. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

The thyroid gland helps to regulate the body’s metabolism, controlling the production of proteins and the use of oxygen by the tissues. “Therefore, any imbalance in this gland can affect the hair follicles. In addition, hypothyroidism can lead to an anemic condition of the patient, which, due to iron deficiency, can also affect the hair ”, he says.

6. Stress

When we are stressed, there is an increase in cortisol levels, which can cause hair loss. In addition, stress can promote the appearance of other scalp problems, such as dandruff, which also has a negative impact on hair.

7. Age

It is important to keep in mind that as you get older, your  hair also ages , becoming naturally thinner and, consequently, ends up falling out. “When a woman enters menopause, for example, changes begin to occur in the body that also affect hair. Therefore, hair loss becomes more prevalent after this period ”, adds the dermatologist.
